Fixing-tainted Butt is appointed as PCB chief selector Riaz’s consultant

It is expected to cause some controversy since the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Salman Butt, a former captain tarnished by fixing, as one of the three advisors, along with Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar Anjum. The PCB had previously selected Wahab Riaz as the head selector in a comprehensive reform of their high-performance system, and the three were nominated as consultants to the former quick.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-294876″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/theindiaprint.com-fixing-tainted-butt-is-appointed-as-pcb-chief-selector-riazs-consultant-download-2.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com fixing tainted butt is appointed as pcb chief selector riazs consultant download 2″ width=”1238″ height=”824″ title=”Fixing-tainted Butt is appointed as PCB chief selector Riaz's consultant 3″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/theindiaprint.com-fixing-tainted-butt-is-appointed-as-pcb-chief-selector-riazs-consultant-download-2.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/theindiaprint.com-fixing-tainted-butt-is-appointed-as-pcb-chief-selector-riazs-consultant-download-2-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1238px) 100vw, 1238px” />

As part of the PCB’s strategy to infuse new life after the crisis at the just concluded ICC World Cup in India, Butt, who was suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his alleged involvement in the infamous spot-fixing scandal during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010, was named as one of the consultants on Friday. The PCB appointed Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shan Masood as the leaders of the T20I and Test formats, respectively, without waiting a day after Babar Azam resigned as captain.

At the request of a bookmaker, Butt, the captain of Pakistan at the time, and two other players, Muhammad Amir and Muhammad Asif, planned to bowl no-balls at certain points during the Lord’s Test match against England. As a result, they were banned by the international cricket organization.

The British Crown court found the three guilty and gave them jail terms subsequent to the ICC’s prohibition. Butt was freed in 2012 after spending seven months at Canterbury Prison in Kent. Amir and Asif were both Pakistani cricket players, although Butt didn’t play domestic cricket until his suspension was lifted.

Butt played in 24 T20Is, 78 ODIs, and 33 Tests for Pakistan. Throughout the three forms, he amassed 5,209 runs and 11 international centuries. He was a member of the 2009 T20 World Cup winning team.

From 2002 to 2017, Akmal played 15 years for Pakistan, appearing in 53 Tests, 157 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. Between 2004 and 2010, Iftikhar represented Pakistan in one Test, 62 ODIs, two T20Is, and claimed 78 wickets in international matches. Additionally, he was a member of the team that won the 2009 T20 World Cup.

According to a press statement from the PCB, the top selector’s first task for consultants Akmal, Iftikhar, and Butt will be to oversee the next five-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand, which is scheduled to start on January 12 after the Test trip to Australia concludes.
